about

As titled, this conjures up quite the visual. Imagine: Goats in the Garden - with goats dancing wildly about while snacking on the available produce, all to the sounds of the rhythmic & melodic motifs whirling about them. Add to that, at Midnight by the Light of the Full Moon - suggesting romantic, earthy, & mysterious elements to the whole clandestine affair. Key: Em

This movement revolves around the original Goat Bleat Motif inspired by conversations held between Mama Goat and her kids. Just as humans have distinct voices, so it is with goats. Based upon the intervals between each goat's voice pitch, I assigned each goat a note. When bleating all together, their monotones made up a minor 7th chord, specifically in this case an Em7.

In order to 'dirty up' the score, I added a ukulele to the ensemble. These are goats after all. In the garden. Getting down and dirty! Often during long stretches in the car between homes with my husband Terry at the wheel and both of us tired of listening to road trip music - I'd reach back, grab that funky uke and start dinking around. I accumulated plenty of little ditties and picked one for use in this movement.

While originally composed with the uke in mind, a mandolin is used on this recording.
